Object description :

"Forestry Axe XIX E - Tree Marking Hammer - Felling Tool Dated 1851"
Antique forest hammer axe, dated 1851, marked "BCT" and hallmark "HB"

This remarkable forged hammer axe is an authentic tool used for marking trees in private or public timber cuts.
Intended to identify trees belonging to the owner of a plot, it bears the initials "BCT" and a blacksmith's hallmark "HB", framed by two solar motifs, evidence of careful craftsmanship dating from the mid-19th century.

Functions and characteristics:

Axe side: The blade is designed to remove rough bark and clear a smooth surface allowing better legibility of the marking.

Hammer side: Used to imprint the owner's initials in the wood, like a stamp, thus ensuring the traceability of the cut.

Historically: these tools played an essential role in forest management. The acts of deposit of forest hammers with the courts documented the imprint of each owner or timber merchant. Even today, in state forests, forest rangers mark trees with similar hammers to designate cuts or select trees to preserve.

Dimensions:
                   Height: 26 cm
                   Width: 12.9 cm
                   Punch diameter: 3.2 cm

This beautiful tool, a witness to a bygone era, will appeal to passionate collectors or bring an authentic and historical touch to a cabinet of curiosities or a characterful decoration.
