Joseph Schippers (1868-1950): "Before back", oil on canvas 64 X 92 cm, mounted in its sumptuous original gilded frame unfortunately very damaged 94 X 122 cm, titled and named on a cartouche. This fantastic Belgian artist from Antwerp, from a family of artists, had two specialties: the sea in its different aspects and the "monkey-playing" in the style of Teniers, putting these animals in situations in different activities normally reserved for humans, tavern scenes, judges and lawyers, alchemists, merchants, fables, etc. of great realism and extremely detailed attention to detail. Ours, with an incredible presence, seems more sculpted than painted, each detail rendered in a hyperrealistic way where the ram and his ewe wait to be returned to the sheepfold at sunset...
