"Urbino Majolica Dish Atelier Castelli "venus" After Annibale Carracci"
Large oblong dish in Urbino majolica, 18th-19th century, Castelli d'Abruzzo workshop, depicting a polychrome decoration depicting The Triumph of Amphitrite - to be specified an old annotation in ink located on the back, barely legible indicating: Venus Tritons... and Annibale Carracci - Probably in reference to a fresco painted by the artist on the vault of the Farnese Gallery in Rome which depicts the Procession of Venus. The border is animated by a rich leafy and floral decoration, cartouches decorated with mascarons and an alternation of reclining puttis. According to the myth related by Hesiod in the Theogony, Aphrodite was born from the foam of the waves after the mutilation of Ouranos; Zephyr saw her as she was coming out of the wave, collected her in a mother-of-pearl conch and then took her to the island of Cyprus also called the island of Aphrodite.
