Biography:
Pierre-Louis DELAVAL is a French painter who was a student of Girodet-Trioson. He began at the Salon of 1810 with two History paintings thanks to which he was exempted from conscription by imperial decree. Delaval painted mainly history and religious subjects. The historical galleries of Versailles also owe him many portraits. He received a second medal in 1817. In 1826, the Ministry of the Interior commissioned the Oath of the Charter, a painting representing one of the key moments of the coronation of King Charles X on 25 May 1825. The work, which has now disappeared, was exhibited at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris, and had to compete with the Coronation of Charles X (Louvre), painted by François Gérard, then First Painter to the King. The artist also took part in the decoration of the Château de Compiègne. Several of his compositions can be seen there: La Force, La Justice and Orphée et Eurydice. He died in Versailles on 25 November 1881.
