Mathieu Béfort, known as Béfort Jeune (1813 - 1880), is a descendant of a famous family of Parisian cabinetmakers.
From 1840 to 1880 , the workshop prospered on rue Neuve Saint-Gilles, hence the high-quality furniture made by this cabinetmaker-marquetry specialist who was inspired by Boulle furniture and Louis XVI period creations.
This piece of furniture is part of the reinterpretation of the Louis XVI style and in particular the creations of Adam Weisweiler.
In this piece of furniture at support height, Béfort Jeune takes up the composition of Socrates conversing with Aspasia that Charles Boulle created around 1700 for a large pair of cabinets now kept at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
