Very rare pewter wine PITCHER in baluster shape with a quarter-round foot and goblet and acorn thumb.
"Crowned tower" gauging hallmark affixed incompletely twice.
Control hallmark very difficult to read: crowned C / (GANGES) / --- /. This is the vintage 1742
Height: 23.9 cm.
GANGES (Hérault), Mid-18th century

In very good condition and of the utmost rarity; two examples encountered in more than 45 years of daily "frequentation" of pewter; the first was of a shoulder shape, this one of a baluster shape.
This small center, located in the triangle formed by Montpellier, Millau and Alès, conforms to the local typology.

Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but these regulations were not widely respected and pitchers bearing gauging punches are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures would end up replacing the pitchers which, it is true, presented a variety of interesting shapes and characteristics of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gaugings from one town to another and often even from one village to another, however close they were. This of course significantly complicated the exchanges ...
