Rare Pair of Antique Royal Worcester Bisque Porcelain Candlestick Holders by James Hadley, Late 19th Century
This fine pair of antique bisque porcelain candlesticks was created by James Hadley for Royal Worcester in the late 19th century. Beautifully modelled and hand-finished, they depict a young boy and girl standing beside naturalistic tree trunks, which form the candleholders at the top.
Each figure is intricately detailed, from the gilt buttons on the boy’s clothing to the floral buckles on the girl’s shoes, demonstrating the exquisite craftsmanship for which Worcester and Hadley are celebrated. The hand-painted palette of soft cream, sage green, blush pink, and warm ochre enhances the naturalistic charm of the modelling. Gilded highlights around the candle sockets add an elegant finishing touch.
The bases bear the Royal Worcester mark, and each figure is signed 'Hadley' on the side — significantly enhancing their appeal and value for collectors. These candlesticks were intended to be both functional and decorative, embodying the Victorian fascination with elaborate candle lighting and romantic rural scenes.
Historical Background
The Worcester porcelain factory, founded in 1751, is one of England’s oldest and most prestigious porcelain manufacturers. By the 1870s, under the Worcester Royal Porcelain Company name, it expanded into decorative arts, producing ornate figurines and sculptural pieces alongside its renowned tablewares.
James Hadley (1837–1903), one of Worcester’s most celebrated modellers, played a crucial role in elevating the factory’s reputation. Starting at Worcester in the 1850s and later becoming chief modeller, Hadley was famed for his exquisite depictions of pastoral life, allegorical figures, and romantic children’s subjects. Even after establishing his own studio in 1875, Hadley maintained close ties with Worcester, supplying models that continued to bear his signature.
Hadley’s work is highly prized today, with more than ten of his masterpieces held in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Ceramic expert John Sandon once described him as "probably the finest English modeller of all time," a testament to Hadley’s enduring artistic legacy.
