"Pressed Smoked Glass Vase Molded By Pierre d'Avesn"
Remarkable vase in the shape of an octagonal gourd decorated in its center on both sides, with a sailboat sailing in full sail. It is made of strong pressed and molded smoked glass, by Pierre D'Avesn. It is signed on the wheel on the base. Pierre D'Avesn (1901-1990), Pierre Girre by his real name, was trained at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris by Decorchemont. He worked for about ten years at Lalique, then at Daum, where he was responsible for the manufacture of pieces using the pressed molded technique, sold under the name Le Lorrain. The crisis of 1929, caused this production to decline. And it was in the mid-1930s that Pierre D'Avesn produced pieces for a very short period, under this personal pseudonym. From 1937 he joined the Choisy glassworks and managed the Verlys line. Also, personal pieces are rare, produced on a small scale, in a difficult economic period. This explains the tiny defects, evidence of an almost artisanal manufacture. This piece is particularly elegant, with a decor emblematic of the period. It is made of very thick and heavy glass, which distinguishes it from the white pressed molded, lighter, intended for a less expensive line. Here the quality is at the same level as at Lalique or Daum, which is logical, since it is he himself who presided over their creations.
