Object description :

"Emilie Charmy (1878-1974), Sunflowers In An Asian Vase And Apples On A Carpet"
This oil on canvas by Émilie Charmy depicts a bouquet of sunflowers arranged in a vase decorated with Asian-inspired motifs, accompanied by a few apples placed on a richly decorated fabric. Traditionally associated with life and the sun, the sunflowers, here inclined, seem to invite meditation on the transience of existence and the passage of time. The work evokes a possible homage to Vincent Van Gogh, and more particularly to his famous second series of Sunflowers (1888-1889), produced in Arles as part of the decoration of the "Yellow House". This studio, dreamed up as a space for shared creation with Paul Gauguin, was the symbol of hope and artistic fraternity for Van Gogh. For the latter, sunflowers went beyond simple floral representation: they embodied universal themes such as life, death, friendship and hope. Their bright yellow glow also reflected a quest for inner light and a search for spiritual fulfillment. Émilie Charmy, a remarkable artist, began her career in Lyon before settling in Saint-Cloud (Hauts-de-Seine). Honored with the titles of Knight and then Officer of the Legion of Honor, she actively participated in the artistic life of her time. In Paris, she exhibited for the first time at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants in 1904, before joining the Salon d'Automne in 1906, of which she became a member in 1910. True to her origins, she also continued to exhibit in Lyon throughout her life. In 2002, her work was honored at the Elles de Montparnasse exhibition at the Musée du Montparnasse in Paris, dedicated to the emancipation of women artists during the interwar period.
