Victor Uytterschaut (Brussels, 1847 - Boulogne-sur-mer, 1917)
Painter, pastellist and initially watercolorist of landscapes, seascapes and urban views. At a very young age, he entered as an apprentice goldsmith with a Brussels manufacturer of metal ornaments. From 1859 to 1862, he took the industrial drawing course at the Brussels Academy and, from 1864 to 1867, the nature landscape course. In the academic year 1864-1865, he received first prize for his end-of-year work. A fan of the outdoors, he produced his first watercolours around 1867 in the area around Spa. The same year, he exhibited at the Antwerp Salon and, in 1869, at the Ghent Salon. From 1870, he frequently stayed in Anseremme, Ghent and Antwerp to paint on location. In 1878, he went to Holland and England, from where he brought back numerous studies and sketches. He painted with a great sense of observation, great finesse and charm views of dunes, marshes, small towns and especially undergrowth. A founding member of "La Chrysalide", he took part in almost all of their events. With Henri Staquet, he was one of the most loyal members of "La Société royale belge des Aquarellistes". Around 1880, he often painted on the Belgian coast, particularly in La Panne and Nieuwpoort. In 1920, the Brussels artistic and literary circle devoted a major retrospective to him.
Works at the Museums of Anderlecht, Antwerp, Bruges, Brussels, Ixelles, Mons and Ostend.
