Adriaen Brouwer (Oudenaarde, 1605 - Antwerp, 1638) was a Flemish genre painter, active in Flanders and the Netherlands in the 17th century. He was an important innovator in genre painting through his scenes of peasant life, his tavern interiors with brawlers, smokers and drinkers, and his expressive portraits (i.e. tronies). At the end of his career he painted a series of landscapes of tragic intensity. His work had an important influence on the next generation of Flemish and Dutch genre painters.
