Antoine Ponthus-Cinier was born in Lyon on August 29, 1812. He is considered one of the leaders of the neoclassical movement in Lyon. He was a student of Paul Delaroche in Paris and became a renowned painter in 1841 by obtaining the second prize of Rome for the historical landscape with Adam and Eve expelled from the Earthly Paradise. He spent two years in Italy at his own expense between 1842 and 1844 and stayed in Florence, Rome, Genoa and Naples. During this trip, he made a large number of studies (painted sketches or pen sketches) which served as a basis or "ricordo" for composing views of Italy throughout his career. Our drawing could thus be a "study" for the work of observation of a landscape (which were in particular washes) which could constitute the final state of a work.
His works are present at the Museum of Fine Arts in Lyon, Besançon, Chambery, Châlon sur Saône and at the Monastery of Brou.
