Object description :

"Delpy - Oil On Canvas 60 X 73 Cms - Sailboats At Sea"
The artwork we are selling is a large seascape, a theme rarely painted by Hippolyte-Camille DELPY and highly sought after by collectors.

Painted in Holland, this impressionist-style composition presents sailboats at sea, with mills in the background.

It is believed to be the painting "Environs de Dordrecht" sold on May 26, 1884 under number 44 during a sale of DELPY's paintings (the subject and dimensions correspond perfectly - see last photos).

BIOGRAPHY:
A student of Charles-François DAUBIGNY from 1855, DELPY's pictorial style will be strongly influenced by the master of the Barbizon school.
DELPY traveled regularly with the DAUBIGNY family during his apprenticeship, met COROT who encouraged him.
From 1870, he worked mainly in La Ville D'Avray and Auvers-sur-Oise. He became friends with Camille PISSARRO and Paul CÉZANNE.
He exhibited at the Salon on numerous occasions, receiving several awards. In 1889, he received an honorable mention at the Universal Exhibition.
The Parisian gallery owner Georges PETIT organized several individual exhibitions for him.

His works are present in museums all over the world: Phoenix art museum, Louviers Museum, Béziers Museum...

He obviously reachs high values, up to 30,000 euros in public sales, regularly between 10,000 and 15,000 euros for his best subjects.
DELPY seascapes are very rarely found on the art market, this is an opportunity not to be missed !!

WARNING: There are a very large number of fake DELPYs on the market, both fake signatures added to 19th century landscapes and works by his son Henry-Jacques DELPY sold as being by his hand !!
