A Chinese Yixing pottery tea caddy, with hand-carved symbols of good luck, long life and prosperity. Makers seal mark underneath.

Yixing pottery, originating from the Yixing region of Jiangsu Province in China, is renowned for its high-quality clay and traditional craftsmanship. The clay used, known as 'zisha' (purple sand), is rich in minerals and ranges in colour from purple to red, brown and even green. These products have been prized for centuries by tea connoisseurs and collectors, both for their aesthetic value and their practical benefits in tea preparation. The tradition of Yixing pottery dates back to the Tang Dynasty and continues to hold a prestigious place in Chinese cultural heritage.
