Pewter
Diameter: 38 cm
A pewter dish in the form of a ‘cardinal’, with a wing engraved with a coat of arms consisting of a helmet, mantling and two coats of arms with three silver roses - one of which has two crosses or crosslets pattées, the whole ensigned by the initials IRAB, and on the right: AMR.
Two marks on the reverse of the wing: the first showing the symbol of the pintier's hammer, accompanied by the initials of the master potter ‘IG’, Johann Rudolf GRÜTTER, received as master in BERNE in 1699 and active until 1750. This mark is accompanied by the control with the crowned F of BERNE.
These large dishes were often used as ceremonial, watch or presentation dishes. They were in use from the beginning of the 16th century until the end of the 18th century.
