Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne was born in Paris on April 12, 1797, and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on February 25, 1814. His professors were successively Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson and then Horace Vernet, who clearly inspired the artist for our painting.
Present at the Paris Salon from 1827 and regularly until 1859, he produced many lithographs from 1824 without stopping painting. The quality of his work was then praised by the contemporary press. He received the third-class medal in lithography in 1834 and the second class in 1840.
The artist died at his home in Paris on April 6, 1860. His entire collections were dispersed at the Hôtel Drouot in the sales of January 14, 15 and 16, 1861.

Museums: Douai, Dijon, Châteauroux, Nevers, Compiègne, Macon…

This is the portrait of Colonel Charles-Louis-Prosper, 4th Marquis de Chérisey (1786-1837) at the time when he commanded the 38th line infantry regiment under the Restoration (from 1822 to 1829). He is wearing the tailcoat of his undress, with the epaulettes of his rank. The representation of the character's uniform can be dated to 1823, the date on which he became a Commander of the Order of the Legion of Honor. He wears the Military Order of Prussia, received in 1817. He was also a Knight of the Order of Saint Louis and a Knight of the Order of Saint Ferdinand of Spain, decorations that can be seen on his left lapel, in the shadows.
