Belgian painter, Willem Paerels studied in Brussels and in 1899 attended various workshops in Paris. He also worked in Holland where he became friends with Rick Wouters.
His development is part of a path, which can be found in other Belgian artists, from Impressionism to Expressionism via Brabançon Fauvism. Founding member of artistic groups such as "Labeur", "Effort" he is one of the important figures of the School of Laethem Saint Martin.
He exhibited in 1905 alongside Marquet, Valadon, Utrillo and participated in many European Salons.
His works are in many international museums.
The fountain by the sea was painted during one of his many trips to the South of France, Italy or Spain.
We find the expressionist realism of a great freedom of style and colors that is specific to him.
