Jean-Jacques Bestieu (1754-1842) Portrait of the Magistrate of the Trial dating from March 18, 1811 between the General Contractors of military beds and the sub-contractors. The painting has undergone some old restorations, sold in its original state. 

Jean-Jacques Bestieu, born on August 23, 1754 in Montpellier (Hérault) and died on May 8, 1842 in the same city, is a painter from Montpellier.
In 1778 he decided to enter the Académie des beaux-arts de Coustou where he obtained his diploma. After a stay in Rome, he returned to his hometown in 1786 where he was offered, following Jacques Gamelin, the position of director of the Société des beaux-arts de Montpellier.
During his career, he also taught drawing at the École centrale du département de l’Hérault. Alongside a teaching career, he also showed a strong political commitment because from 1796, he was associated with the Société populaire de Montpellier and became a member of the municipality. In 1797, ten years after his appointment as director, Jean Jacques Bestieu was chosen to succeed Abraham Fontanel as curator of the art collection of the École Centrale de Montpellier, whose collection he was able to enrich in 1803 with around thirty paintings donated by Jean-Antoine Chaptal, who had become Minister of the Interior. This collection, added to the thirteen works present, is kept in the Hôtel de Ville, it represents the beginning of a museum that was abolished at the time of the Restoration, before the creation of the Musée Fabre in 1824.
