Bucolic work by the French painter, Henri Dodelier also known under the pseudonym Henri Doldier, which depicts cows grazing in the park of a castle, most certainly in the vicinity of Bilieu in Isère.
In the foreground, we can see a herd of cows grazing under the supervision of a guard, discreetly sketched by the painter under the trees on the left. The second shot shows us part of the imposing property, most certainly in Isère.
The artist uses a color palette in a shade of green to transcribe the atmosphere of a day in spring, the season when cows begin to graze in the fields.
Henri Doldier, born in 1862 in Vesoul, began a military career in 1884 as a second lieutenant in the 11th mounted hunter regiment before being mobilized in Algeria from 1901.
In 1903, he was named Knight of the Legion of Honor and promoted to officer of the same order in 1915 then commander in 1924.
On his return to France, he ended up with the rank of colonel around 1925.
In parallel with a brilliant military career, Henri Boldier was a student of the painter Edouard Detaille and became known for illustrations under the pseudonym H. Boldier in the newspaper Le Monde Illustré. In particular, he illustrated articles about the Foreign Legion.
He is renowned for his equestrian illustrations and paintings.
