"French School (1810s) - Captain Of The Company Of Black Musketeers Of Louis XVIII"
- Oil on canvas. - This excellent painting dated 1814 depicts one of the most ephemeral French military corps: the Black Musketeers were the attempt by the newly installed monarchy of Louis XVIII to revive the legendary royal companies of the Sun King, and of which they were among the heroes of Alexandre Dumas in the 17th century. Caught out in 1816 for budgetary reasons, its only memorable performance was to accompany the exile of the Bourbons during the Hundred Days on Napoleon's return to Paris, which resulted in the defeat at Waterloo. The officer's personal coat of arms, accompanied by a Latin quotation of a distinctly conservative nature ("Nihil agere poeni tendum" translates as "I do nothing that deserves punishment") and the Restorationist emblem of the white cross, in opposition to the Napoleonic eagle. are a sample of the chronological and historical exception of this unique portrait. - Dimensions of the image without frame: 40 x 31 cm / 54 x 45 cm with magnificent framing. - It comes from a private collection of paintings in Paris. - Good general condition. Minimal defects. - This painting constitutes a unique, original and irreplaceable work of art. - Galerie Montbaron attaches a technical sheet established by a qualified art historian with all its lots.
