16th-17th centuries Spain or France Exceptional footage of a cloth of gold for furnishings or for a tent with a complex weave of woven gold strips with an edging forming quincunx fleurons. Unique and rare piece made up of three sewn strips 48 cm wide. We naturally think of the Cloth of Gold camp which opposed Francis I and Henry VIII of England. Unique testimony to study. The condition report is average to good with small patches and blades that are crumbling in places, without compromising its readability. Note visible halos on the reverse. Stable structural condition; Dimensions: 382 cm long by 147 cm wide composed of three sewn strips 48 cm wide. The Camp of the Cloth of Gold is the name given to the diplomatic meeting that took place between King Francis I and Henry VIII from June 7 to 24, 1520. The name "Camp of the Cloth of Gold" is given to it because of the splendor that the two rival courts displayed there, in particular tents hung with gold brocade that amazed the witnesses: thus the Marshal of Fleurange describes in his memoirs "the most beautiful tents that were ever seen, the greatest number and the main ones [being] of cloth of gold, curled inside and out, both rooms, halls and galleries and many others of cloth of gold and gold and silver canvases and had on the said tents many mottos and golden apples and when they were stretched out in the sun, it was beautiful to see (...)"
