After graduating from agricultural and commercial school, he worked in a sake liquor store, then moved to Tokyo in 1924. He studied painting from 1927 to 1929, then returned to his hometown to become a primary school teacher. He was a schoolteacher for 11 years. At the same time, he studied sculpture and exhibited.
