Very beautiful Religious Statue in Polychrome Carved Wood 17th-18th Century Of Saint Francis of Assisi. His Eyes are made of glass. He is represented standing, his face and eyes turned towards the sky. He is dressed in a blue sackcloth robe, tightened at the waist. The stigmata of the side of Christ appears on his chest. His hands, missing, were probably open revealing the stigmata of Jesus Christ. It should also be noted the probable absence of feet under the robe. The statue is very expressive. The dimensions are ideal, the Saint is of a beautiful size. Spain - 17th or 18th century This work is the work of a disciple of Pedro de Mena. Francis of Assisi (Italian: Francesco d'Assisi), born Giovanni di Pietro Bernardone in 1181 or 1182 in Assisi (present-day Italy) and died on October 3, 1226 in the same city, was an Italian Catholic religious, deacon, mystic and founder of the Order of Friars Minor. Knight of Christ and of the Lady Poverty, Saint Francis is considered one of the greatest saints in the history of the Church: he made Christianity accomplish a decisive mutation, and was quickly nicknamed the Alter Christus, "the other Christ", after his death. According to Catholic tradition, he is the first saint in history to receive the stigmata.
