"Pair Of Small Japanese Chests In Black And Gold Lacquer, Japan, 19th Century."
Pair of small Japanese black and gold lacquer chests, Japan, 19th century. These miniature chests, inspired by the Hasami-Bako travel chests, have a rectangular shape. Their surface is meticulously decorated in hiramaki-e, a technique of raised gold lacquer, representing a pattern of stylized foliage and vines. Finely chiseled gold metal ornaments, called nanako, adorn the corners and clasps, adding a touch of refinement. The lids and walls are decorated with a mon (stylized family crest), characteristic of pieces made for noble families. The interior, intact, has a black lacquer top with a gold edge and an original paper covering, testifying to their exceptional state of preservation. These miniature chests were not only pretty boxes but were used as decorations during the Hina Matsuri (doll festival), which explains their very good condition. Dimensions: 9.5 x 14 x 9 cm.
