Antwerp, 1610 - Brussels, 1690
Interior of a Tavern with Figures
oil on panel, cm. 40.5x28.5
Signed on the edge of the table in the center right: "D. TENIERS"
The painting, in good condition, takes up one of the Flemish painter's favorite themes.
A group of middle-aged men occupies the center of the scene while, sitting around a table, they smoke a pipe using a small brazier to light it.
In the background, on the left, a man from behind is probably intent on reorganizing.
The colors are typical of Teniers' palette with dominant browns embellished with splashes of color such as the green hat and red jacket of the figure in the foreground. The signature "D. TENIERS" on the edge of the table suggests that the painting can be attributed - if not directly to the painter - at least to his workshop, which was very prolific in the production of genre paintings (rustic scenes, tavern scenes, witchcraft scenes, village festivals, alchemists' laboratories and gallery interiors), initially close to the style of Frans Francken II, then to that of Adriaen Brouwer.
