Beautiful pewter PITCHER called "swan neck" in baluster shape with long neck and flared throat, fitted with a lid with a thumb with tassels.
Control hallmark: Crowned C / 1691 / (ARG)ENTAN.
Height: 30.2 cm.
ARGENTAN, Extreme end of the 17th century or first half of the 18th century
Piece of rare provenance in very good condition, a local crack in the lid is however reported.
No other control vintage is known for this center which used that of 1691 for a large part of the 18th century. It therefore does not allow to precisely date the objects which bear it. Argentan is also not the only center not to have respected the royal edict of 1691 establishing this control hallmark. Let us recall in passing that these pitchers were the wine measures of the Ancien Régime. The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities to ensure "good measure" for the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was rarely applied and pitchers bearing gauging marks are very rare. The metric system appeared at the very beginning of the 19th century and took several decades to establish itself due to the resistance to change shown by users, but little by little these uniform cylindrical measures would end up replacing the pitchers which, it is true, presented a variety of interesting shapes and characteristics of their place of manufacture, but also an infinite number of different gaugings from one town to another and often even from one village to another, however close they were. This significantly complicated trade. There was nevertheless a rule common to the whole territory: The gauge of the POT determined those of the sub-measures, the latter successively having a gauge e previous one half of the before.
