The boy is completely absorbed in the activity of carving, which is emphasised by the fact that we can barely see his finely carved face. What we do see, however, is the artistically designed incision of the carving knife into the stick. It may be a fishing rod, which complements the net draped around his shoulder. Despite the moment depicted, there is a timelessness to the image due to the boy's concentration.
