Small domestic salt mill in sandstone 18th century

Rare salt mill in sandstone, decorated with a fox sculpted in relief .("symbol forming part of popular folklore, salt the tax "the Tithe" / the Fox the intelligent, the cunning").
Domestic mills are composed of two millstones:

-  A rotating millstone located on the top, fitted with a wooden handle to drive it. It is decorated with a lying fox sculpted in the round with great delicacy and realism and placed on a small decorative frieze around the edge.
-  A fixed lower part called the "Sleeping Millstone" mounted on three feet sculpted directly in the mass, decorated with a frieze of domes and grooves. This base also includes the "dégorger" evacuation groove for the salt.
-  This mill was once used to refine coarse salt kept in homes for use on demand.

Condition:
- Good general condition, with normal signs of wear related to its age.
- Slight oxidation of the metal parts due to contact with salt.
- Small chips on the edges, evidence of its use.

Provenance: Former collection of Georges Dubouchet, "Le Musée des Campagnes". A similar object can be seen at the Crozatier museum in Puy-en-Velay.

An exceptional piece due to its small size and the quality of its execution, a rare testimony to domestic practices and popular folklore in the 18th century.
