"Religious Statue Polychrome Carved Wood Saint-just Beauvais Auxerre XVIIth"
Religious statue in polychrome carved wood representing Saint-Just* of Beauvais with his right arm outstretched and his head almost decapitated in blood, from the late 17th-early 18th centuries. This statue is in good general condition. The polychromy is a little damaged but it is still lively. Please note: some accidents, losses, cracks and wear on the wood and the polychromy, old worm holes, look carefully at the photos. * Saint-Just: according to a passion from the 8th century, this is a 9-year-old child, martyred at Sinomovicus, near Beauvais. Saint-Just had left Auxerre, with his father, to free his uncle, captive in Amiens. Pursued on the way back, the father and uncle hid while the child exposed himself alone to danger. He was then decapitated. The place of the martyrdom is located at Sinomovicus (Saint-Just en Chaussée). When the father and uncle come out of hiding, they see the corpse sitting, its head on its knees. The tongue then begins to speak: it addresses God, but also the child's companions, who are responsible for bringing the head back to the mother, who has remained in Auxerre. This story is located at the origins of cephalophoria.
