Antique Italian painting from the first half of the 17th century. Oil on canvas artwork depicting a Saint Jerome of remarkable pictorial quality. Painting attributable to a Caravaggesque painter of the Neapolitan school of the workshop of Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), lacking authentication. His style generated a particular pictorial movement, tenebrism, which was characterized by an exaggerated representation of reality, violent and brutal, accentuated by epidermal, anatomical and psychic details. In fact, we see a Saint Jerome in his study with a powerful chiaroscuro effect that creates plasticity, volume and sculpts the figure of the Saint with light. We find all his characteristic iconographic symbols such as the memento mori skull and the large book, as a Doctor of the Church and the first translator of the Bible into Latin. The Saint is wrapped in a splendid purple cloth while we glimpse the galero, the cardinal's hat, on the left. 20th century frame in carved and gilded wood, beautifully decorated. Painting already restored with re-lining, replacement of the frame and re-colouring in small spots. Overall painting in good state of conservation. Interior size H 118 x W 96 cm.
