"Object Of Curiosity - Funeral - Souvenir Medallion Fixed Under Glass "to My Wife""
This type of object is becoming rare: funeral medallion whose subject in fixed coaster represents two joined hands. The symbolism of the two hands coming together refers to a bond of friendship, filial relationship or marriage. Here, we know from the dedication that it is in memory of the deceased wife. Usually, the woman's hand is in the upper position. Here the representation is more unusual, as it is the wife who died before her husband and it is the husband's hand that is in the upper position. This type of funerary subject was found in certain regions of France between the 2nd half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The condition of this medallion is clearly visible in the photographs. The back and hoop are made of sheet iron. This type of funerary souvenir was found in niches dug into the headstones of graves. Sometimes sealed with a porthole and forming a funerary diorama, more often than not they were hung as they were, at the mercy of the ravages of time and the weather.
Condition: very satisfactory given its age, usefulness and place of display.
