Object description :

"Hamsa, Protection But Also Door Knocker, Gilded Bronze, Fez, Morocco, Early 20th Century"
Above all, a home protector but also a door knocker, this Hamsa is an articulated metal piece located on the exterior doors of houses.
This Hamsa is used to call its occupants by knocking on the door but is also an important symbol of protection.
It happens in the Arab and Islamic world to find the Hand of Fatima represented in old or recent door knockers, as a symbol of protection at the entrance of houses.
Known as Jamsa or Hamsa, it is a symbol of protection used by Jews and Muslims.
## The name of the Hand of Fatima refers to Fatima, the daughter of the Prophet Muhammad, a virtuous young woman born in Mecca in the year 604, and married to Ali, the first cousin of the Prophet.
Fatima prayed with such fervor that she was able to make rain in the desert, leaving behind beautiful flowers that emerged from the sand.
# Consequently, the Hand of Fatima is attributed protective powers. Hamsa in Arabic means five, the five fingers of the hand and the five pillars of Islam.
This Hand of Fatima in gilded bronze, accompanied by two rings, is decorated with religious Arabic graphics and plant decorations.
Origin, Fez, Morocco, first part of the 20th century.
