The box is rectangular in shape.
The hinged lid is decorated with a rich romantic rocaille decoration of characters in a garden, surrounded by fantastic architecture of curves and counter-curves, typical of the style of the reign of King Louis XV.
We see a flirting couple, a putti symbolizing love and dogs, symbols of fidelity.
The bottom of the box represents a couple and a dog in the same frame decorated with curves and counter-curves.
The sides are engraved with flowers and foliage.
The box is hallmarked:
. Trace of hallmark, normally the charge hallmark which should be a bull's head
. Date letter: crowned P, for the year 1755-56
. Discharge hallmark for small silver works between 1750 and 1756: a hen's head
. An illegible goldsmith's hallmark
A superb and rare silver snuffbox from the first half of the 18th century, with a well-marked rocaille decoration, typical of its time. The shape of the box is however already in the classic taste of the post-rocaille period, in fact, as early as 1754 this taste was already denounced, notably by Cochin with his supplication to the goldsmiths.
