"Poppies Alexandre Couder 1808/1879"
Oil on canvas Dim without frame 64/80 Dim with frame 76/92 French Ecoloe Signed A Couder Bénézit: Born April 16 in Paris, died in 1879. Painter of history, genre, still lifes, flowers and fruits. Entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1824, he was a student of Baron Gros. Initially attracted to sculpture and engraving, he finally devoted himself to painting. He participated in the Paris Salon between 1833 and 1868, obtaining a third class medal in 1836. Knight of the Legion of Honor in 14853. If he painted historical and genre subjects, he seems more at ease in his still lifes, whose compositions, well rhythmed, do not linger on details. The last sentence of Bénézit perfectly illustrates the painting and his technique. Our painting depicts wild flowers, with poppies particularly prominent. When you know that poppies don't keep once they're cut, this painting gives us the advantage of having them all year round.
