Commode Mazarine En Marqueterie Thomas Hache

Mazarine chest of drawers in native Alpine veneer marquetry attributed to Thomas HACHE (Toulouse 1664- Grenoble 1747). Rectangular quadrilateral in shape, with a double curved crossbow front and flat sides; each of the four uprights is fitted with a projecting bracket terminating in a small cambered foot; the whole is topped by a rectangular wooden top with sloping front corners and round corners within a brass lingotière marked with chased bronze spandrels. The symmetrical geometric marquetry of scrolls and arabesques set off by fillets highlights the contrasting play of walnut and burl woods. Our commode opens with four drawers on three rows simulating six drawers. Beautiful ormolu and brass fittings, including mouldings, spandrels, drop handles, key escutcheons, keys and foliate sabots. The presence of drop handles on the sides is a reminiscence of the chest of drawers from which the first commodes originated in the last third of the 17th century. A chest of drawers of a similar design appears in Pierre and Françoise Rouge's book “Le génie des Hache”, plate no. 78. The commode is called “Mazarine” because of its prominent baluster brackets, reminiscent of the furniture first made for the library created by Cardinal Mazarin in 1643. The Mazarine commode is also a reminder that it was one of the very first French furniture designs to feature native wood marquetry, most often walnut or olive; more colorful than the Boulle marquetry of brass and tortoiseshell, it was very popular at the end of the Sun King's reign. Famous Dutch-born or trained craftsmen such as Pierre Gole and Jean Macé brought this style to France. But these models were adopted by several craftsmen, including members of the famous Hache family: first Noël, who certainly passed through Pierre Gole's workshop in Paris, then Thomas, based in Grenoble.
Thomas Hache (1664-1747), Thomas is the paterfamilias of the Hache cabinetmaking dynasty. He arrived in Grenoble around 1695, and in 1699 married the daughter of Michel Chevallier, a Grenoble cabinetmaker whose workshop had been established in the last decade of the 17th century. Thomas was not only a talented cabinetmaker, but also a shrewd administrator and businessman who introduced an efficient division of labor practice that he had probably observed in Parisian workshops.
