Orientalism - Pinel De Grandchamp Louis Emile - Portrait Of An Egyptian - Watercolor - Signed

Portrait of an oriental man, painted between 1862 and 1865 by the famous orientalist painter Louis Emile Pinel de Grandchamp, during his stay in Egypt.
The man is captured full-length, in a setting of dunes. We note the profusion and accuracy of the details concerning his costume and his various accessories. The whole is done in a harmony of strands and blues, discreetly highlighted by the red of the scarf.
The work is signed lower left "E. de Grandchamp".
The work is in very good condition, clean, without foxing. A few discreet light areas in the blue sky. It is placed under glass, in a gray-blue passepartout. The wooden frame, decorated with inlaid patterns, is the product of remarkable craftsmanship from Essaouira (Morocco). It is in excellent condition. The whole forms an elegant ensemble, in a renewed orientalist spirit.

The artist
Born in Paris on July 14, 1820, died in Beaune on March 13, 1894, Louis-Emile Pinel de GRANDCHAMP is a French orientalist painter.
He was a student of Hippolyte Dubois then of Edouard Picot and at the Ecole Royale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He made his debut at the Salon at the age of 18 with two portraits.
He was not yet 30 when he decided to leave Paris for Constantinople. Alongside his work as a secretary, he painted and drew constantly. Soon he was painting portraits of almost all the major officials of the Ottoman Empire. He also gave painting lessons. When the Crimean War (1853-1856) broke out, he went to the front and produced numerous drawings for L'Illustration. He resumed his life in Constantinople in 1856.
In 1860, Pinel de Grandchamp spent several months in Egypt, then in Tunis in 1862, and again in Egypt until 1865. Everywhere, he produced portraits but also street scenes in oils. He painted not only the great figures but also the anonymous people who populated the cities.
After suffering a terrible attack of cholera, Pinel de Grandchamp returned to France in 1865. He lived for about twenty years in Paris before settling in Beaune. He was a regular at the Salon des Beaux-Arts in Paris and regional Salons (Lyon, Le Havre, Dijon, etc.). He enjoyed great success with his orientalist works.
Pinel de Grandchamp's works are held in several French museums (Musée des Armées, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Narbonne, etc.). Many works by this artist have been the subject of public sales, where his success is undeniable.
