Rostislas Loukine was a Russian/Belgian/French artist, born in Belgorod/Russia in 1904 and died in Bar-sur-Aude/France in 1988. He was a painter and journalist. After traveling through Europe (Russian Revolution), he stayed in Paris for eleven years. There he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and met N. De Stael. He eventually settled in Brussels and received additional training at the Academy under the direction of A. Bastin. He was a painter of oriental and even Byzantine inspiration of landscapes and atmospheric seascapes. He found his inspiration mainly in the Black Country. Despite his many wanderings across Europe, he remained attached to the colors and myths of his native country. This can be seen in the intensive use of black and gold in his works, particularly in many icons. Rostislas Loukine finally settled in France, where he has his museum in Arsonval. His work can be found in the Museums of Ixelles, Tervuren and Namur. He is mentioned in BAS I and Two Centuries of Signatures by Belgian Artists. (Piron)
