Gnaoua (sing. Gnaoui, also transcribed under the spelling Gnaua, Gnawa, Guenaua, etc.), designates both a musical style of Morocco and the members of sub-Saharan African origin, mainly descendants of slaves, gathered in mystical Muslim brotherhoods in which trance plays a very important role. Gnaoua finds its place in a space at the crossroads of Berber peoples including the Tuaregs, peoples of sub-Saharan Africa, those of Islam, their religious traditions (brotherhoods, trances) and musical traditions and their instruments.
Gnaoua music was inscribed in 2019 on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
This recognition highlights the importance of Gnaoua music, an essential element of Moroccan cultural heritage, particularly celebrated in the city of Essaouira, where the famous Gnaoua Festival is held.
