Superb openwork carved mirror applied to a beech frame, evoking popular art from the end of the 18th century in a naive and singular style. This rare piece full of symbolism offers a rich iconography around hunting and nature.
Description of the Sculpted Scenes:
The motifs represent hunters in period outfits, surrounded by emblematic animals of French forest fauna: majestic deer, hare, bird, dog and a mysterious salamander.
Symbolism
Salamander:
A legendary creature, the salamander symbolizes resistance to fire and victorious ordeal. In mythology and alchemy, it is associated with the element of fire and embodies spiritual perseverance. Its link with faith and resurrection made it valuable in medieval bestiaries and heraldic representations.
The Deer and the Stairs:
At the top of this scene stands the stag, symbol of fertility, resurrection and spiritual elevation, its antlers renewed each year evoking the cycle of life. The sculpted stairs on the sides seem to guide the eye and the mind towards this central figure, suggesting a path towards knowledge and light.
A house surrounded by lush vegetation completes this richly detailed setting, full of meaning and mystery. Each element invites personal interpretation, according to each individual’s sensitivity.
