Highly appreciated, he is the subject of numerous public commissions.
His works are featured in the largest museums: Louvre Museum, Boston Museum of Fine Arts...
The history of this painting is quite astonishing because it was discovered hidden behind an authentic oil by the painter Pierre de BELAY (1890-1947) in the same format. On this occasion it was damaged and very dirty, hence the restorations carried out.
The subject represents a lively Italian landscape, two figures standing at the top of a path next to a ruined building.
Oil on canvas c.1800
38 x 55 cm
Signed lower left "V.BERTIN"
Very nice presentation, when it was discovered, no tears were to be reported.
Several gaps in material in the vegetation on the right were present and the paint was likely to lift in places (hence some gaps); a relining was decided in consultation with my professional restorer, who carried out some illusionistic touch-ups.
The signature "V.BERTIN" which could be read perfectly when wetting the canvas was unfortunately partly faded during cleaning but remains very present.
I would like to point out that the painting presents a typical red preparation characteristic of this period
