"French School Circa 1860 : "romantic Montage After Le Brun""
French school circa 1860 “Romantic montage after Le Brun”, collection of four works under the same frame, separated by a gilded paper marie-louise, “Les amours jardiniers” 10 X 33 cm, “Cérès” 18 X 23 cm, “Générosité de la Nature” 19 X 26 cm, “Chevalier charging” 14 X 9.5 cm for a set of 36 X 51 cm, on canvas from Maison Amiot without frame. The first three are oils on the same canvas, the fourth is a watercolor on pencil strokes on paper glued to the canvas. Numerous annotations (framer?) on the back of the support cardboard. As is, breaks in the canvas and small losses. Thanks to the expertise of Dominique Brême, a specialist in the artist whom I would like to thank here, I can, without this compromising the text below, that these are studies after Le Brun's decor for the Pavillon de L'Aurore in Sceaux. If those at the bottom, with their arched top, showing a sleeping woman on sheaves of wheat and another naked woman in the middle of animals pressing her breast to make generous milk flow, as well as the frieze of cupids, could well be projects for wall decoration on a naturalist theme, the fourth is unrelated and seems to have been put there only to balance. If Delacroix's influence on 19th century artists was immense and would last well after his death in 1863, the construction, the coloring and the fine craftsmanship of these sketches indicate to us that their author was also a Master, yet to be identified.
