"Antoine Fremy: Warships In Rough Seas "
Beautiful drawing dated 1861, representing warships, the French fleet, maneuvering in rough seas by Antoine Fremy. Antoine, Auguste Alexandre Fremy (1816-1885) born in Toulon, worked at the arsenal of the same city. In 1850 he will make a mission to Brazil. We see on this drawing the different types of vessels used in the middle of the 19th century, both the last heirs of the 18th century, as well as mixed vessels already using steam and the propeller. The work of the artist is remarkable, precise in the description of the ships, and using a fade to render the stormy atmosphere of the elements. Initially in a poor oak frame, I preferred to transfer it to this pretty pitch pine baguette from the same period, with a hanging ring. The mat (stains) is original, the background cardboard recent. Dimensions of the drawing at sight: 34 cm x 23 cm
