Ashford black marble
Ashford black marble is a dense limestone that, once polished, has undeniable decorative qualities. Quarries have been exploited since the late 16th century, mainly for architectural elements. It wasn't until the middle of the 18th century, with the spread of the “Grand Tour” among the upper classes of society, that small objects imitating Roman and Florentine productions were marketed.
