Charming genre scene, which shows us 3 young women relaxing under a pergola. The 2 seated women hold a flute of champagne in their hands. The one standing, in the center, holds a cigarette. Her face and bust stand out against the blue sky. A bottle of champagne is placed on a sideboard, to the left of the young women. All 3 have large eyes and satin dresses. The pergola is covered with foliage and flowers. The whole exudes refinement and the joy of living.
The work is signed lower right.
The work is in very good condition. It is offered in a carved and whitewashed wood Bouche frame. This clear and modern frame perfectly highlights the work. It is also in very good condition.

The artist
Nicolas Edward Gabé was born in Paris in 1814. He exhibited at the Paris Salon between 1835 and 1864. Specializing in miniatures at the beginning of his career, he acquired a certain celebrity by painting the events of his time, such as scenes from the 1848 revolution. He further expanded his repertoire over the years, painting still lifes and seascapes, highly appreciated by collectors of his time, as well as genre scenes, such as the one we present here.
Several of his works are kept in French museums (Maritime Museum of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue, Magnin National Museum of Dijon, etc.). Others have been the subject of public sales.
