Biography:
AMBROGIANI Pierre 1907/1985

Pierre Ambrogiani, born January 16, 1907 in Ajaccio, died in Allauch on September 23, 1985, is a French painter, engraver and sculptor. Pierre Ambrogiani was born into a modest family, who came to settle in the old working-class district of Marseille. From the age of thirteen, he was first employed at Marseille-Colbert as a dispatch carrier, then he was a postman from 1928 to 1950 at the Post Office in Marseille. In 1936, helped by André Malraux and Louis Aragon, he participated in the creation of the first Maison de la Culture in the provinces with his friends the Marseille painters Antoine Serra, Louis Toncini, François Diana. A key Marseille personality, Pierre Ambrogiani was also a friend of Marcel Pagnol and Jean Giono. His studio was located on Cours d'Estienne d'Orves, near the Vieux Port. He traveled the countryside with his car which served as his studio, painting on location. He set up a studio on Quai Rive Neuve in Marseille in 1943.
Renowned for his brightly colored palette, he painted landscapes of the south and still lifes of fish. He also engraved many plates to illustrate books. In 1962, he decorated the church of the Immaculate Conception in Marseille with frescoes and stained glass windows. He is responsible for a postage stamp, Saint-Paul de Vence, in 1961. He is buried in the Saint-Pierre cemetery in Marseille. His body was transferred to the Sault cemetery in Vaucluse. Exhibitions: 1937: Salon d'Automne Salon of Painters Witnesses of Their Time Exhibitions: 1936: First group exhibition at the Maison de la Culture in Marseille. 1946: Paris 1947: New York 1973: Marseille, retrospective exhibition at the Musée de la Vieille Charité. 2008: Retrospective exhibition at the Palais des Arts, Place Carli, Cours Julien in Marseille from May 8 to August 31. Awards, prizes: 1951: International Prize of Menton 1967: Grand Prize of the Salon of Painters Witnesses of their Time 1968: Gemmail Prize for “Painter of Light”
