Here is a beautiful and large oil on canvas from the beginning of the 20th century representing an animated view of a schooner, trawlers and sailors in a port, Breton or Norman.
- Certain similarities would suggest the old port of Grandville (the semi-circular quay in the foreground of the composition), in which case this schooner could be the three-masted "Le Marité" attached to the port of Grandville, without certainty..
Dimensions including frame: 87 x 75 centimeters
Biography:
Jean Joveneau was trained at the École des Beaux-Arts then at the Académie Julian in the studio of Tony Robert-Fleury and finally with the landscaper Luigi Loir.
At the beginning of his career, he had a studio on Boulevard Henri IV; there, in addition to still lifes of flowers, he produced views of the Île Saint-Louis.
- He then focused on large still lifes and vast landscapes in which he sought a plastic harmony that was willingly cubist, but without ever going as far as abstraction.
He made his debut at the Salon in 1903 and had his first successes in 1908. He was noticed by the gallery owner Bernheim Jeune.
The latter exhibited him in 1911 with Maximilien Luce and Henri Matisse and then devoted a solo exhibition to him in 1923.
He also exhibited abroad: - In 1912, he presented Place Delta, a view of a Parisian street, at the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne. - In 1913, he participated in the first international exhibition of the Secession in Rome. - In 1919. He was represented at the 27th special exhibition of the Kestner-Gesellschaft in Hanover.
His works are prized by French and foreign collectors.
Robert de Rothschild bought several of Joveneau's paintings. The French state acquired a still life of a hare and a statue of Cupid. Félix Fénéon bought two nudes and several landscapes by Joveneau. A still life with a mirror dating from 1912 is in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
