"Cardboard Box And Printed Engravings By Hogarth, Tickets For The Harlots Progress, Late 18th Century."
The size of this box is exceptional, but the most intriguing thing is the small vignettes stuck on each end. These vignettes, engraved, are advertisements to buy Hogarth's engravings with the price and conditions of sale! These vignettes seem to be originally stuck and authentic. The two engravings represent an identical subject, only the text differs. On one we learn that it is a "subscription ticket for the Harlots progresses". On the second, we can read "5 shillings being the first payment for two large prints. one representing Moses brought to Pharoah's daughter, the other Saint Paul before Felix. Promise to deliver when finished on(e) perceiving 5 shillings more" and "NB They will (or may?) be seven and six pence each prints after the time of subscribing." The size of this box is original and the function mysterious but the salmon color with a green frieze gives a charm to this extraordinary box in very good condition.
