Object description :

"Ink Drawing Dated And Signed By Stanislao Lepri"
Beautiful ink on grained paper, full of strength and softness at the same time, depicting a sculptor modelling a head on a foot, with a woman who appears to be carrying a loaf of clay. This drawing is by Stanislas Lepri (also known as Stanislao Lepri) (1905-1980).
A companion and great love of Leonor Fini, this ink may well represent a portrait of the couple.
The drawing is dated and signed lower right: Lepri - 1943 or 1945 (difficult to read).

Stanislao Lepri: Born in Rome in 1905, died in Paris in 1980.
Until recently, his work was little represented and unknown, overshadowed by that of his partner Leonor Fini. However, Lepri's works and their qualities have recently been rediscovered thanks to a number of recent exhibitions that have finally put Stanislas Lepri back in his rightful place in the world of art history. During his lifetime, only a small circle of collectors, critics and art dealers were able to appreciate his work and present it to the public in exhibitions, catalogues and publications.
Born into a family of aristocratic diplomats and conservatives, he trained and began his career at the Italian consulate in the Principality of Monaco, then in Brussels. In 1941 he met the artist Leonor Fini, who was to change his life. He was fascinated by the Woman Artist and she by this man with an undeniable but strange talent for drawing. As time went by, he distanced himself from the world of diplomacy and encouraged by Leonor Fini, he decided to devote himself to art in 1942. He moved to Paris and began a partnership with Leonor Fini and Konstanty Jeleński.
His paintings, considered surrealist, were a mixture of the fantastic, the dreamlike, the macabre, spirituality and, at times, melancholy. For me, Stanislas Lepri's works are labyrinths of the human soul, traces of which can be found in the gaunt works of Zdzisław Beksiński.

Condition: The drawing is in perfect condition. The sheet, however, shows a cut in the top centre and a small chip with a micro-cut in the top right. On the bottom right, an old trace of abrasion can be seen and felt.
