"Japanese Maiwai Fisherman Kimono - Japan "
This is a Maiwai kimono from the Meiji era, late 19th century. The Maiwai is a very specific kimono that was offered to fishermen by the owner of a fishing boat on the occasion of a big catch. The patterns are symbols of good omen. It is a Katazome dye with vegetable indigo and paint with natural pigments. The piece is made of cotton and so is the lining. Very rare kimono, especially in good condition, since this type of piece was worn by sailors on boats. Japan, Meiji era, 125 x 128 cm.
