Antique Wedgwood coffee service for Hardy Brothers, rare claret and gold porcelain, c. 1905

This elegant antique Wedgwood porcelain coffee service was made in England around 1905, exclusively for Hardy Brothers, the renowned Australian jeweller and luxury goods retailer. Created for the high-end market, the service exemplifies Edwardian elegance with influences from the late Belle Époque and early Art Deco periods. The design features a rich mottled claret or deep burgundy enamel ground with delicate floral detailing and wide decorative borders in black and gold — a striking contrast against the crisp white porcelain body.

Comprising 13 pieces in total, this luxury coffee service is designed for five persons. It includes five demitasse cups and saucers, a tall, slender coffee pot with domed lid, and a matching sugar bowl and milk jug. The coffee pot is particularly refined in form, with a gracefully tapering silhouette and an arched handle that adds height and elegance. Its sweeping spout and sculpted finial offer a subtle nod to Neoclassical design, enhancing its decorative appeal.

Each piece is marked “Wedgwood” and carries the pattern number X9927, which was produced in two rim variations. While the white-and-gold version is more commonly seen on the antique market, this rare black-gold variation was produced in very limited numbers for Hardy Brothers, making it a highly collectible and sought-after example of early 20th-century fine porcelain.

The crimson and gilt decoration reflects Wedgwood’s refined craftsmanship and their tradition of producing decorative yet functional luxury tableware. Sets like this were typically sold as premium gifts or displayed in upper-class drawing rooms. Today, this service would appeal to collectors of antique coffee sets, Edwardian and Belle Époque design, or those seeking a statement piece for a refined tea table or luxury interior.

Measurements
Coffee pot: Height 20.5 cm / 8.1″, Width 17 cm / 6.7″, Capacity approx. 720 ml
Cups: Height 5.8 cm / 2.3″, Capacity approx. 85 ml
Total weight of service: 1580 g

Condition
Overall in excellent antique condition. The gilding is bright and well preserved, with only minor rubbing to a few high points. The claret enamel remains vivid throughout, showing only faint wear on a small number of pieces. The coffee pot has a discreet chip to the inner rim (not visible when the lid is closed) and some glaze crazing  to the interior commensurate with age. There are minor traces of coffee inside the pot, which can be removed with gentle cleaning. All pieces remain structurally sound with no restoration, and the service displays beautifully — a striking and refined example of early 20th-century Wedgwood porcelain.
